Woop Words

Collective nouns are one of the wonderful eccentricities of the English language. From An Army of Ants to A Zeal of Zebras, the wit, charm and beauty of these popular and often evocative terms fascinate, entertain children and adults alike.

At Woop Studios we fell in love with the idea of creating images that helped depict collective nouns in pictures and launched our limited editions prints gallery to exhibit them.

We believe that making a comprehensive A-Z list of collective nouns freely accessible will help those who share our fascination learn new terms and enjoy and share familiar. Some of the collective terms listed have real pedigree and lineage and can be found in The Oxford English Dictionary, James Lipton’s 1968 An Exaltation of Larks or even The Book of St. Albans published in 1486. Some are of a more dubious and newer vintage than the original terms of venery.
